so I'll remove the discogs and spirit-of-metal link because they are about the CDr release
one more thing: what is enough to create a "digital media" release? if a band has a bandcamp page with the same releases they have on cd, can i make a "digital media" version for all of them?
SothoTalKer
i guess
SigHunter
or has there to be some kind of difference to the physical releases
djr013
I think that difference in medium is what qualifies it as a different release
This would perhaps still be the case if you, say, buy a physical copy via Bandcamp which is obviously more well known as a digital platform.
SigHunter
ok, so if there is a way to legally _download_ it, that justifies a digital media release
kthx
Lotheric
Streaming release are also digital releases even if unavailable to download
like on spotify, deezer, etc
SigHunter
i'd argue that streams can't be owned
Lotheric
doesn't disqualify it as a release though
SigHunter
hmhmhm
Lotheric
imho
djr013
there's even youtube videos in the database
though I don't know how many of these qualified as "releases" tbh, I mostly run across them as standalone recordings
but if the recording has "cover art" or "track art" it makes it worthwhile to create a release for it just for that feature alone
SigHunter
ok
djr013
also sometimes an artist will release a series of tracks over time with the intent that they together compose an album
idk the best way to handle that, perhaps ideally you'd want to give each track a release date, and thus a release
then another release with a relationship to all these releases, or something

some platforms like soundcloud make that bit-by-bit album creation more natural and less apparent in hindsight

it gets less clear imo if the artist, say, released an album on bandcamp and then later released the exact same album on itunes
for purposes of copyright, only the first release of these identical recordings would count when calculating copyright expiration date (hey, it still technically exists, in theory)
it helps to know how many generations must be born and die before the estates of long-dead authors and artists can no longer milk royalties from history
djr013 stops ranting and goes back to tagging
one somewhat common situation where an artist will release an album bit-by-bit is if they're crowdfunding it, though alternatively that can be a source of lots of one-off pre-release recording sessions and mixes
it surely won't belong until some clever avant garde electronic musician will literally release an album one binary digit at a time

huh I don't know if this is a recent change but apparently "series" entities can now include releases or even individual works or recordings rather than just release groups or events
SothoTalKer
has been for quite some time. you just have to make the series of the appropriate type first.
djr013
it's been a while since I really edited
