OK, here’s a Picard WTF. I just upgraded (as per previous discussion) to 1.4.2. I know, I know, version 2+ is out. But this is nice for being able to handle images better, including apparently pulling from Amazon as well as Internet Archive. But for this release: https://musicbrainz.org/release/226843d8-de61-4... which has been working fine, I now get, in Picard, a rectangular grey image with the text “Nog geen af
This image is not in the list of images for that release.

Hello. I have a question on how to enter something. I recently got a physical CD that includes two extra tracks for download. Should I enter those as standalone recordings, or add a new release to the release group with an extra medium that includes the extra tracks, or something else?
kepstin
aereaux: how were the two extra tracks included? a physical download code printed and packaged in the release? included on your digital receipt or in an email? is it specific to a particular store?
in many cases it would be appropriate to add a new release with a second medium of type 'digital media' for this sort of thing.
aereaux
kepstin: Yeah, sorta. There is a digital download code included with the physical CD, and there is also an option on the site where I bought it to download without using the code.
OK, that sounds like the best solution to me as well. Thanks.
kepstin
yeah, that sounds like the best option for this release

Hi, I'm currently tagging songs by underground artist and have doubts regarding 2 cases. 1) single song is released with little to no prior information, sometimes even completely without official release, file just appears on shared server. Should it be added as Single release or standalone recording? 2) Songs initially uploaded standalone and
later given tracknumbers and released as EP. How should they be treated?
elomatreb[m]
Standalone recordings sound like a reasonable option for the first case, but it's up to you if it merits a "release" event (e.g. if there is associated art, many people will just make a single release)
The latter case definitely should be a proper release, with the release date probably being the date the EP/tracklist itself is released, not the individual recordings. If you added standalone recordings, you can reuse them in the release tracklist
alf98
well, in the case of old releases where the information become lost I used standalone, but in case of the fresh one missing release date seems like a pity
elomatreb[m]
If it's worth it to make a release, you're free to do so. There are no notability criteria per se
alf98
ok, thanks :)
elomatreb[m]
You can also preserve the date for the standalone recordings either manually in its annotation field, or using relationships where appropriate
alf98
but I don't think it will be used by taggers
elomatreb[m]
E.g. if it's publicly (legally) downloadable, you can add that as a download URL relationship and set a starting date
No, taggers in general don't really understand standalone recordings
The "release date" is inherently tied to a release existing
alf98
what in the case standalone recordings are later uploaded together as "singles [20XX-20XX]" with tracklist? same as 2?
tbf I think it will become significant problem as popularity of singles and digital-only releases increase
elomatreb[m]
Standalone recordings are an "escape hatch" for the cases where a release is either entirely unverifiable or actually too minor to add
If it's worth it to treat individual files as proper singles, that's the right thing to do
alf98
ok, thanks

Hi!
How do I add cover art image to an audio file?
(using Picard)
snosk8r has quit
outsidecontext
physkets: manually: if you select the file loaded into picard you can drag and drop an image file on the cover art box at th lower right
darkstardevx joined the channel
physkets
I think I did try that... let me do it again
outsidecontext
physkets: automatically: if you tag your files against MB releases, you can enable cover art providers in options. this will automatically pull cover art for loaded releases from the online sources. builtin available is the Cover Art Archive, which is the cover art you see on mb.org
physkets
Ya, ofcourse, that is how I notmally do it, but what I mean is for albums or songs that either are not there, or don't have cover art there.
outsidecontext
got it
physkets
I need to do them manually
outsidecontext
we should have some user discoverable UI element to open the file chooser for cover art (context menu entry, maybe even just clicking on the empty box)
physkets
that would be very helpful
outsidecontext
there is a lot reliance on drag and drop in picard :) if you know it it is great, if not you probably never notice

This doens't seem to be working....
Drag-dropping an image onto the "CD" box while the correct music file is selected, doesn't seem to be doing anything.
yvanzo joined the channel
Moreover, the mouse has a red-stop-circle-with-slash sign, idicating that I can't drop it there (I'm guessing)
outsidecontext: Is there any other way?
outsidecontext
what kind of file is it? maybe it is unsupported
physkets
JPEG image data, JFIF standard 1.01, resolution (DPI), density 96x96, segment length 16, progressive, precision 8, 480x480, components 3
outsidecontext
works for me. I'm AFK for a while, but can check back later

I'm on Linux, and using a Wayland-based DE.... might that have anything to do with this?

physkets: could well be. I'd recommend you to not use the native Wayland backend for Qt5 but instead force it to use X11 (need to lookup, but it was to set some environment variable or uninstall the Wayland backend if it is a separate package on your distro). The Wayland Qt5 support has some issues, drag and drop issues being part of this
and of course make sure you have xwayland installed

outsidecontext: Ya, looks like that's it. When I use srat both the file browser and Picard with the env variable: `QT_QPA_PLATFORM=xcb`, then the drag-and-drop works.
But it would be nice to have somethign like a file-browser popping up to allow selection, like you suggested.
outsidecontext
physkets: good to hear it works. Qt's Wayland support is good already, but not 100% there yet unfortunately. I guess xwayland will be with us for a while :D

physkets: I'm pretty confident it is not a Picard issue. It could also be an issue of the wayland implementation, or the file manager of course.
physkets
Then I should report it in the right place.

physkets: which Qt5 version and what Wayland compositor is it? There have been many fixes to Qt with each release
physkets
outsidecontext: Qt Version: 5.15.0 and KDE Plasma Version: 5.19.4

Someone tried to change the sort order of release events: https://musicbrainz.org/edit/72090837 How come they were able to enter this, shouldn't this have been rejected?
