very off topic, because I am an opinionated tech preacher; I do believe that those who champion the need for dark themes (1) turn their brightness up WAY TOO BRIGHT or as I call them: the glowing faces, or (2) have a legitimate visual reason for needing a darker theme.
That said, I also like dark themes, because I am a night owl.
I don't believe I have a legitimate / physical vision-related reason for needing it. I'm also (ideally) not a glowing face. Auto-brightness does its thing, but the base set brightness on my phones tends to be something like 15% or less.
on my devices*, and on my phone.
Yaniel
well, what is "way too bright" anyway?
white themes are usually thought of in the same way as things printed on white paper
but a backlit or emissive screen is about as far from that as you get
VxJasonxV
way too bright is glowing faces
anything that leads to eye strain or deterioration
and yes, the irony of this is that back in the day, even black was a light source
that's different in the LED era, of course.
Yaniel
well, even "LED" screens are just backlit LCD so it's still largely the case
but we finally do have some proper emissive OLED screens (and hopefully very soon, microLED so we can stop worrying about burn-in)
but with those SDR white is still supposed to be calibrated to the brightness of a white sheet of paper in whatever viewing conditions
VxJasonxV
it's always a light source, because it uses light to draw. It's just better and better as the years go on.
Yaniel
and that is pretty dark all things considered (not helped by the fact that an LCD handles ambient light way worse than paper)
VxJasonxV
My bringing up the CRT thing was mostly to reinforce my own point, that a screen drawing white was a lot harder (on the eyes, on power draw, etc.) than a screen drawing black.
and that continues to be the case, more and more dramatically so, as time goes on.
Yaniel
but the bigger problem is that it still isn't paper, you look at a lot of things on a screen that are supposed to be a lot brighter than paper
or idk if you do, I know I do

lol
I don't know what the last physical media I looked at was that isn't a screen.
I mean, I do have paper littered all over my desk, but an analog photo?
┐('~`;)┌
Yaniel
but an analog photo is literally paper
VxJasonxV
I do get your point.
Yaniel
I mean sure we can restrict all our media to the capabilities of dead trees, but we could also make use of the improved capabilities - it just requires also designing stuff in a way that accounts for them

which is basically what all the HDR faff is about, including the part where you get to choose a brightness level for SDR content
then you can have all the white UI themes you want while still not burning your eyes and also not losing hope of making out details of other content
but it'll take a while before we get that figured out

I have a release that should be merged into another release, but they have mismatching tracklist lengths (the to-be-merged release was created off an incomplete Bandcamp tracklist). Can I do this somehow without having to first edit the release to have a same-length tracklist?
Erin
are you trying to make a second release in the release group via the merge
or make it like, a second disc in the release you already have
or are you just saying that the items are literally the same
fwiw, if there is an uncomplete "digital" release it's OK to repurpose it to be a different format with those amounts of tracks (if said digital release never excisted with ie 14 tracks, but a cassette one did)
MajorLurker joined the channel
if not, you can add more tracks to he 14 track one, making sure everything is in the right order, and then merge them (you can ask for help with votes to get them through so you cna do the merge edit faster too)

I do wonder whether old design/illustration rels should be migrated to this
