Huh… so this release: https://musicbrainz.org/release/389231a0-6fbd-4... was just changed in an interesting way. The release itself was left alone, but every recording was set to [unknown] as the artist. I assume this was an attempt to clean up classical stuff; Chopin obviously didn’t record any of the tracks. I’ve switched them all to be recorded by the actual performer, but what’s going on with that bo

sublim21: if it exists and you have sources, add it :)
crism: it was set to unknown because someone was overzealously cleaning them up
The script sets the recording artist based on relationships, but the pianist wasn't added as a relationship here
I guess loujine didn't notice the release artist and assumed we didn't know who the performer is, so he set them to unknown :)
tsk, tsk, loujine ;p
crism: you'll want to cancel the release edit though (you don't want to actually change the track artists, just the recordings)
I added the pianist as a relationship too now
Made a few changes to the release as well (titles, release artist)
sublim21
reosarevok, sources? uhh, its a track put together by me and a buddy. its just got guitar and drums.
reosarevok
sublim21: is it online anywhere? IF so, that's your source ;)
(basically, ideally other people would be able to verify it exists, that's about it)
sublim21
ahhh. ok. well, guess we'll throw it on some website so it has a source
reosarevok: guilty, I didn't understand Melody was the performer :p

hi, I just noticed something weird in picard, I ran the acoustid analysis on my resident evil 2 soundtrack files and it got imported into some album called just [non-album tracks] which picard won't let me open in the browser
King_DuckZ: Did you just added the RE2 soundtrack to MB?
AcoustID doesn’t know about newly Releases until a bit after the (next) hour when it’s done its hourly MB data update, so AcoustID can only return Recording MBIDs until then.
(Ie., if that’s the case and you try again now (a few minutes after the hour :)), it should work.)
King_DuckZ
Freso: no, it was already there
it's an old album tho, it would be some coincidence if someone else added it just now... is there a way to check?
Freso
No clue then. What does Picard’s logs say? What album is it?
You can check the edit history.
King_DuckZ
well the [non-album tracks] I can't find it even if I serch manually, no idea what it's supposed to be
Freso
Non-album tracks are just recordings not linked to a Release.
Ie., if you remove all Release-specific information from a Recording, it’ll be filed under NAT
So seems more like an AcoustID issue than a Picard one.
King_DuckZ
the log just complains about some cover errors, it may be due to other albums as well, not sure
so if I submit the acoustid for this album then everything will work next time? is that what you're saying?
Freso
No.
The AcoustID and Recording MBIDs have already been linked.
But for some reason the AcoustID.org copy of the MusicBrainz database hasn’t been updated or something’s gone wrong, so it doesn’t have the MB metadata needed to provide Release information back in response to the request.
PICARD-1824: Get Release data for Recordings where AcoustID doesn’t have metadata
Freso
(I created that just now.)
I’m afraid it is, to the best of my knowledge.
King_DuckZ
heh thanks because I'm not sure I was able to explain all that :p
Freso
Yeah, it’s a bit technical. :)
King_DuckZ
well it's fine for now since I just used the beloved tagger button in the browser to get the right release in picard, but it'd be nice if it worked for next time or next user
and about my second question, I think it's something I can do myself, should I fix it?
Freso
Yeah. I’ve encountered this a bunch of times where I’ve just added a release myself, but I haven’t bothered to file any sorts of reports, since I can work around it just fine… and since the AcoustID.org copy of the MB db will get updated within an hour anyway, so the next person needing it will not need to wait. I haven’t seen month-old Recordings without data like this before though. So definitely please report :/
when adding aliases for a release (group), i.e. romanization for Japanese titles, do I need to add the alias to both the release and the release group?

the track called AbSolitude here is credited to two guys and a company in parentheses, how should I render that in MB? should I add 3 artists to the song?

Thanks, reosarevok and loujine… sorry to dump a complaint then bail like that. I guess I’d added that album 6 years ago, and I’m still not completely in sync with the classical guide. Thanks for the assist!

Should a 2-in-1 (re)release be a Compilation? (reosarevok?)
(Ie., where both the included releases were previously released on their own.)
https://musicbrainz.org/doc/Release_Group/Type#... says that "a reissue of an album, even if it includes bonus tracks" is generally not a compilation, but we consider box set anthologies etc. compilations, don’t we?
navap
For some reason I keep expecting to find the release 'add external link' feature under 'edit relationships'. Is that just a me thing?
I think I have the disc id of an album I just added but I don't have the physical CD so I can't let picard detect it for me - is there a way I can still add that disc id or should I just ignore it?

echarlie
reosarevok: of course there's seperate release and recording relationships. ugh.
now to go make some fixes
navap
King_DuckZ: How do you have the disc ID without the physical disc?
reosarevok
echarlie: usually you want to set recording ones, but some things apply to the release as a whole
Say the cover isn't for a specific recording :)
sublim21
Freso, thanks. will look into those links
echarlie
heh. unless that specific recording was released as a single :D
reosarevok
Then that's a separate single release :)
Same for a few other things (manufactured in, for example)
echarlie
fair
lot of really subtle stuff that makes sense, but takes a lot of unwrapping and editing to understand
reosarevok
Performers can be added on the release level too, but that's meant for cases where you have something like "musicians in this album: a long list"
echarlie
ah.
reosarevok
And you don't think (or at least aren't anywhere near sure) they perform on all recordings
sublim21
so like one of those, 'save the world' records?
reosarevok
So, for a classical piano album, where you know the pianist plays it all, put it on the recording
For a rock album, if you're sure all the tracks have drums, for example, then put the drummer on all tracks - if you don't know, put them on the release :)
